Jennifer Hudson Nabs Illustrious EGOT Status After Tony Win

Congratulations to Jennifer Hudson on becoming a member of Club EGOT!

The singer-songwriter, actress and producer became an EGOT winner on Sunday at the 2022 Tony Awards. She is also the youngest EGOT winner ever.

The 40-year-old actress and crooner made history by being the third African American and the fifth woman to earn the prestigious title.

EGOT is an acronym for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. To reach the EGOT level, one must win all four. Hudson won a Daytime Emmy for producing Baby Yaga

, multiple Grammys for Dream Girls and her self-titled debut album, an Oscar for best-supporting actress in Dream Girls, and, Sunday night, a Tony for her Best New Musical A Strange Loop
.

Other Black EGOT members are Whoopi Goldberg (2002) and John Legend (2018). Other female EGOT winners are Rita Moreno (1977), Helen Hayes (1977), Audrey Hepburn (1993), Goldberg and, now, Hudson.

According to People, before achieving EGOT status, Hudson joked that she should “get two more dogs” because it has “helped” her win her awards after naming the dogs after the awards.

“I got a dog and named it Oscar, and then I won my Oscar,” Hudson said. “And then I got a dog and named it Grammy, and then I won my Grammy. So I think I should get some dogs and name them Emmy and Tony — and it’ll give me good luck, and I’ll win. [They’re] like my good luck charms.”

No, she does not have dogs named Emmy and Tony, the actress is just winning these awards out of pure talent.

Hudson’s musical A Strange Loop, the most Tony-award nominated show of 2022, achieved 11 nominations. The Broadway show has over 40 producers, including Billy Porter, Ilana Glazer, Mindy Kaling, RuPaul Charles, and Don Cheadle.

The musical follows the life of a young artist “at war with a  host of demons — including the punishing thoughts in his head — in an attempt to capture and understand his own strange loop.”

In addition to EGOT, Hudson is set to have her own talk show The Jennifer Hudson Show which will air on Fox television stations this fall.
