Iconic Bass Player And Singer Michael Henderson Dead At 71

Legendary songwriter and bassist Michael Henderson died July 19 at 71 after being admitted to Emory University Hospital two weeks ago for an undisclosed illness.

After passing, the iconic bassist’s family posted a touching message on his Facebook page. 

Singer, Songwriter, Bass Innovator, Music Producer, Father and Son Michael Henderson has peacefully made his transition surrounded by family and loved ones today at his home, Atlanta, Georgia… Bless his heart and soul. He touched the lives of many and returned that love through his many live concerts, music recordings, social media, interviews and incessant touring, which he loved…Please stay posted for details pertaining to The Michael Henderson “Celebration of Life.” 

A fellow distinguished bassist, Bootsy Collin, wrote a message of remembrance on Twitter, commemorating some of Henderson’s most known accomplishments. “Dangit, we lost one of the Real Ones. Our Bass brother Mr. Michael Henderson (July 7, 1951-July 19,2022), was an American bass guitarist and vocalist. He was known for his work with Miles Davis, Dramatics, Stevie Wonder & many others. Prayers going out to his family & friends!” 

A member of the soulful Chi-Lites, Marshall Thompson also added a tribute, “Another sad note my good friend Michael Henderson, has Pass R.I.P a great entertainer that traveled all around the world with The Chi-Lites and Aretha Franklin for many, many years, He will be missed.”

Henderson was born in Yazoo City, Mississippi, on July 7, 1951, and raised in Detroit. He gained traction from being incredibly talented with the bass, getting attention from Stevie Wonder– continuing to tour with him. Henderson was well known for his bass playing on memorable albums, but his most famous claim to fame was with his vocals on “You Are My Starship,” according to Billboard. 

He claimed he started playing bass guitar because of the Motown star James Jamerson in the Take Me I’m Yours: Michael Henderson[…] Anthology.

His family requests donations for a memorial in lieu of flowers.
