Hurdle Queen Reigns Supreme: Sydney McLaughlin Breaks Her Own World Record

Sydney McLaughlin broke her own world record in the 400m hurdles at the U.S. track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon.

On Saturday, the Olympic hurdle queen crossed the line at Hayward Field in 51.41 seconds.

“I mean, it’s Track Town USA, what do you expect? she said after the race. “Every time I come here I can just feel something amazing is going to happen.”

McLaughlin held the previous record when she ran a 51.46 at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

She added, “The goal is to improve upon myself and push the limits.”

When asked how she would celebrate her new PR, McLaughlin said, “Eating some real food besides vegetables. Like a cheeseburger or something, some pancakes.”

The top three finishers in each event will represent the United States in the world championships next month.

Britton Wilson and third-place finisher Shamier Little will join Mclaughlin in the 400m hurdle event.

Allyson Felix, the United States’ most decorated track and field athlete, likely secured her spot in her final world championships. She placed sixth in the 400m finals, qualifying her for the 4×400 meter relay.

After her race, Felix said, “Happy that I don’t have any more open 400s ever. I went to come here and give it my all, try to get in position for a relay, and was able to get that done. Can’t complain.”

NCAA champion Talitha Diggs won the 400m coming in at 50.22.

“It was a great field. So just wanted to make sure to maintain my form, engage my core and just push,” Diggs said.

U.S. sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson did not qualify for the world championship team in the 100m or 200m.

We can’t wait to see the competition at the world championships in July.
