After Somalia-born fashion model Iman met David Bowie at a dinner party in 1990, the two became inseparable, tying the knot two years later and welcoming a daughter together in 2000. Speaking to the impact that her decades-long marriage to the musician had on her, Iman recently spoke with People about why she doesn’t plan to remarry after the “Under Pressure” singer’s death, saying that Bowie is “not my late husband. He’s my husband.”

Recalling how Alexandria Zahra Jones, her 21-year-old daughter with Bowie, once asked her if she would ever walk down the aisle again, the model revealed to the publication, “I said ‘No, I will not.’ I still feel married. Someone a few years ago referred to David as my late husband and I said ‘No, he’s not my late husband. He’s my husband.’”

In January 2016, Bowie died at age 69 after battling liver cancer for over a year. On her treasured memories with the Grammy award-winning singer, Iman also told the outlet, “I definitely feel his presence, especially when I look out over the glorious sunsets at our home because David loves sunsets. So in that way he is ever-present,” adding, “Through my memory, my love lives.”

Sharing the moment that he knew Iman was “the one,” Bowie opened up about the couple’s love story to Hello! Magazine in 2000, saying at the time, “My attraction to her was immediate and all-encompassing. I couldn’t sleep for the excitement of our first date. That she would be my wife, in my head, was a done deal. I’d never gone after anything in my life with such passion in all my life.”
