George Johnson and Madeline Rabb: The Perfect Love Story

Finding your soulmate and the person you want to spend the rest of your life with is a magical feeling. However, everything could change when the one person you love the most is no longer around. Newlyweds George Johnson and Madeline Murphy Rabb are the perfect examples of finding love again later in life.

Johnson is a businessman and entrepreneur who was married to his first wife, Joan, for 70 years before she died in 2019. As a widow for nearly three years, the 94-year-old was lonely without his beloved wife and turned to his granddaughter about having a companion, AFRO reported.

She started asking her friends if they knew any suitable women that would be a great asset in her grandfather’s life. Finally, one mutual friend asked, “Do you know Madeline Murphy Rabb?” Rabb was an accomplished yet, independent woman who led a fulfilling life as an art consultant. Unfortunately, after 39 years of marriage, she became a widow when her husband, Dr. Maurice Rabb, died in 2005.

The 77-year-old spent the next 17 years believing that she should never get married again. Luckily, Johnson’s granddaughter was familiar with Rabb and knew her son.

“I’ll ask my grandfather if he would like to meet her,” she responded.

When she told Johnson the name of the potential woman she wanted to pair him with, his response was priceless.

“Madeline Murphy Rabb! I’ve known her for more than 50 years! Get me her phone number!” he exclaimed.

Johnson grew impatient as he waited for his granddaughter to give him Rabb’s information. As a result, he started looking up the Baltimore native for more than three hours on google.

After finding her contact information, he reached out to her, saying, “Madeline Rabb, this is George E Johnson. Are you looking for a companion like I am?”

Since then, Rabb said she couldn’t remember everything she said to Johnson during their telephone conversation. Instead, she was more impressed with his confidence while expressing complete transparency. He immediately invited her for dinner at his condo directly across the park from hers.

Three days later, they reconnected over dinner. The two spent more than three hours chatting and catching up like old friends. While they instantly developed a connection with one another, Rabb was relieved to find a man that wasn’t intimidated by her independence and life accomplishments. The couple realized how much they had in common — love of family, spiritual grounding, philanthropy, politics, food, travel, and the arts.

After spending a month together, Johnson knew he wanted a wife instead of a girlfriend. The couple realized love such as theirs rarely happens at their age, and they decided to get married in a small ceremony on March 30.

The newlyweds hope their love story will inspire others to find their true love in life.

Rabb is a native Baltimorean with over 50 years of experience in the art field as a painter, arts administrator, jewelry designer, collector, curatorial activist, and writer. She has curated several important African American art pieces, including Ariel Capital Management and Brown Capital Management. Rabb’s work can be found in national and international museums while providing private tours of her collections. She is currently working on her memoir, “Curating a Life.”

Johnson is the founder of Johnson Products, a Chicago-based company that has served the Black haircare market for more than 44 years. After three years, he developed the well-known hair straightener Ultra Sheen and became the first Black-owned company listed on the American Stock Exchange in 1971. Johnson received numerous accolades for his accomplishments in the Black community while receiving honorary doctorate degrees from nine universities.
