Pernell-Karl Sylvester Subban, best known as P.K. Subban, is a former professional ice hockey defenceman of the NHL, and now a signed TV analyst for ESPN, is getting pushback after he made a “lunch” comment at Lizzo’s expense.

On May 2, P.K. Subban, who inked a three-year deal with ESPN in November, said the Toronto Maple Leafs was not prepared for the Florida Panthers, and that they need a Lizzo-sized lunch to be energized and well nourish for Game 2 to compensate the team’s Game 1 loss in the Stanley Cup Playoff series.

“Maybe they need to pack a Lizzo-sized lunch,” Subban remarked. “They weren’t prepared, in my opinion.”

P.K Subban’s comment is a response to co-host John Buccigross’s comment, who simply suggested that Toronto should “pack a lunch” after losing 4-2.

Fans of Grammy-winning artist Lizzo were upset with P.K. Subban’s comments about her weight, stating that referring to her clinical obesity was a form of fat shaming and not just a pop culture reference.

According to blogs like The Neighborhood Watch, a woman believed to be P.K. Subban’s mother has been compared to Lizzo in size, which some view as hypocritical on Subban’s part.

Lizzo, who attended this years Met Gala, has yet to comment on the remark, but in the past she has address her own experiences with body image and the negative comments she has received about her size.

“I’m sick of being an activist because I’m fat and Black. I want to be an activist because I’m intelligent, because I care about issues, because my music is good, because I’m a pioneer for women,” the singer, whose  real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, told Letterman during their sit down interview.

In the NHL, P.K. Subban played for several teams, including the Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, New Jersey Devils, and on Sept. 20, 2022,  P.K. Subban announced his retirement from professional ice hockey.
