Former ‘American Idol’ Star Jordin Sparks Opens Up About Her Husband, Career And Past Love

Singer-songwriter Jordan Sparks is opening up about her five-year career sabbatical and her husband, Dana Isaiah Thomas.

Sparks and her fitness guru and model husband Isaiah tied the knot in 2017. The two have been married for nearly five years and welcomed their son Dana Isaiah Thomas Jr. in 2018. Before Isaiah, Sparks went through a public breakup with singer Jason Derulo after a lengthy relationship.

She says one thing that made her know Isaiah was the one.

“Sometimes when you’re dating, you get giddy, crazy, anxious, sweaty, and all that stuff, but it wasn’t like that when I met him,” she said. “It was safe. I felt safe. I felt comfort, and I felt like, I know with him, we’re gonna elevate and do much more, and I’m gonna be able to do much more than I ever could by myself. Seriously, I wouldn’t be sitting with you right now if he didn’t help me see who I was again and push me and get me there. So, that’s bae right there.”

While co-hosting the FOX daytime talk show The Real, she also says she knew Isaiah was the one for her because of what he represents.

“I married Dana because after I went through therapy and I really worked on myself—I cut myself off from dating, and I went celibate. And I just was like, ‘I have so much love in my life. The next person who comes into my life in that way needs to add so much more than I already have.’” she recalled.

She continued, “I married Dana for multiple reasons. Obviously, I love him so much, but he was the first man to actually see me. He saw me, for Jordan, and who I am and all the things that I love and all my quirks and all my weird things and all my spilled drinks and all the things. He was the first person to see me and not have any preconceived notions about who I was. It was amazing because once we started talking, he got to know who I was, and I got to know him outside of this. It was just really incredible. He made me feel safe. He made me feel happy and comfortable.”

In a recent interview with T-Pain’s Nappy Boy Radio Podcast, the “No Air” singer revealed she had writer’s block.

“In terms of creativity, I had writer’s block from 2015 up until lockdown,” she said. “I would get into the studio, but I didn’t feel connected to anything.”

After a lengthy relationship, Spark had also gone through a very public breakup with singer Jason Derulo.

Sparks told The Breakfast Club that they’d gotten into an argument, and she apologized and assumed they were fine. She was scheduled to leave town the next day.

“He helped me with my bag to the car, he kissed me and told me he loved me, and then didn’t call,” she told the radio show hosts.

Derulo later said that the pressures of marriage got in the way of their relationship in his own interview with the radio show.

With the Derulo situation, and her label going bankrupt, she began her sabbatical in 2016 and met her husband shortly after.

“I took that sabbatical and really started to focus on myself. I was like. I have so much love in my life already that I don’t need anymore,” she said. “Whatever comes into my life next is gonna be a bonus and just be an addition to the amazing life I already have. Literally, God placed him on my doorstep, and we met, and we never stopped talking, and we’re about to celebrate five years this July.”

In other news, the former Idol contestant recently made an emotional return to American Idol’s 20th season. In this clip, season six winner Sparks returns to mentor contestants before their Hollywood Week performance.

Sparks also recently went viral as fans discovered her ghost-writing career with hits like Ariana Grande’s “The Way,” which earned her a BMI songwriting award.
