Damson Idris finally got his long-awaited meeting with the Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington a year after the Fences actor claimed he didn’t know the Snowfall.
During an interview on the red carpet for A Journal For Jordan, an interviewer asked Washington if he thought Idris was one of the leaders of the “new Black Renaissance in TV and film” since he auditioned to portray his son in Fences and was compared to the actor.
Washington’s voice and face indicated he had no idea who the interviewer was talking about, even when informed that Idris was in Snowfall.
“No disrespect, Damson, no disrespect,” Washington told the camera.
The UK actor appeared on Good Morning America and recalled when Washington recognized him.
“It was huge, man,” he said. “It was a big moment for me. I went to see Timberwolves versus the Lakers. (Sic) He was like sat on the edge. I didn’t get to meet him. He snuck off. Two days later, I watched Warriors [and] Lakes. And I’m like, ‘Oh, he’s going to sneak off, again.'”
As Washington passed Idris to shake the media’s hands, the Snowfall actor seized his moment.
“‘Denzel, Denzel, hi,'” the actor recalled saying to Washington. “‘Thank you, thank you for everything.’ He’s like, ‘Thank you, son.'”
Idris introduced himself, a lightbulb moment for the Equalizer actor.
“He spins, remembers last year when I was getting cooked and then he was like, ‘Aye, my man. Aye, my boy. Aye, you owe me money, you owe me money.'”
The late director and producer John Singleton created Snowfall. In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, the host told Idris that Singleton thought the actor reminded him of a young Washington. Idris laughed and said Singleton referred to him as “Damzel.”
