Eddie Murphy To Be Honored With Cecil B. DeMille Award At 2023 Golden Globes

Legendary award-winning comedian and actor Eddie Murphy is set to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2023 Golden Globes.

According to CNN, Murphy will be honored with the award at the 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards in January.

“We’re honored to present this year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award to the iconic and highly esteemed Mr. Eddie Murphy,” HFPA President Helen Hoehne said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to be celebrating the lasting impact on film and television that his career–in front of and behind the camera–has had through the decades.”

The Brooklyn native, who previously won a Golden Globe, is also a six-time nominee and starred in countless classic films, including 48 Hours (1982), “Beverly Hills Cop” (1984), “Trading Places” (1983), “Coming To America” (1988), “The Nutty Professor” (1996) and “Dreamgirls” (2006). He first rose to prominence on Saturday Night Live at the age of 19 and was a regular cast member from 1980 to 1984.

Named after the American film director, producer and actor, the Cecil B. DeMille Award is traditionally awarded to “an individual for their outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment” by the HFPA Board of Directors. Past recipients of the award include Oprah Winfrey, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, and others.

Dec. 18 marked the 35th anniversary of Murphy’s groundbreaking stand-up comedy film, Raw. Directed by actor, director, comedian, and writer, Robert Townsend, the 90-minute show was filmed at the Felt Forum in NYC’s Madison Square Garden. It was released in 1987 and, as of January 2022, is the highest-grossing stand-up comedy concert film ever released, generating $50.5 million in North America.

Back in October, Sis2Sis reported that Murphy was ordered to pay $35,000 in child support to famed Spice Girls member Melanie Brown for their child, Angel. The two had been married for a decade.
