Veteran actor and iconic comedian Eddie Murphy reverted to his comedic past during his acceptance speech at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton in California.
On Tuesday night, the 61-year-old Brooklyn native was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award, the Golden Globe’s lifetime achievement award, and he had some sage advice for “new up-and-coming dreamers and artists.”
Before the comment on the night, Murphy opened up about almost being in the business for 50 years. He then gave the audience “three things” to live by.
“I want to let you know that there’s a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind. It’s very simple. Just do these three things. Pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your f**cking mouth.”
🎉 The biggest round of applause for Eddie Murphy, this year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award recipient! Your decades of unbeatable comedy and incredible performances deserve to be acknowledged and celebrated! 🎉 #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/IWiU6LEmmf

The audience roared with laughter.
Murphy referenced the now-notorious “Oscars slap” from 2022. During the live broadcast of the 2022 Academy Awards, show host Chris Rock referenced Jada Pinkett-Smith’s bald head, and husband Will Smith walked onto the stage and smacked fire from the veteran comedian. The Independence Day actor then retreated to his seat before yelling, “keep my wife’s name out your f*ucking mouth.”
Footage of the dialogue circulated online; the reactions were hilarious.
Eddie Murphy would be the only person to make a Will Smith joke that was actually funny LOL #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/Qdaeod8a4M

“I said that’s the blueprint. Because, in reality, I worked with Jada. I love Will. And I, Chris and Will, and it’s all love!”
