DMX’s Memorial Service Attendance Restriced To Family And Close Friends Only

COVID-19 restrictions caused the rapper's family to host a small gathering.

DMX shocked the world earlier this month when he was admitted to a New York hospital after reportedly suffering a heart attack caused by a  drug overdose. Though fans hoped the rap artist would pull through, he, unfortunately, was taken off of life support on April 9, dying at only 50-years-old. Details from DMX’s memorial service were shared via his Instagram on Wednesday and revealed that though fans can live stream the homegoing celebration on YouTube, only his close friends and family will be able to attend due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Earlier this week, it was reported that DMX’s camp would hold a public memorial for the hip-hop star, and those closest to him would be able to mourn at a private funeral ceremony. According to Essence, ticket information and numbers were discussed behind the scenes for a public memorial at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Yesterday, it was announced on DMX’s Instagram page that there would be a “Celebration of Life Memorial” event on Saturday, April 24, that fans will be able to live stream on YouTube. The following day, a “Homegoing Celebration LIVE” event will air on BET.

It was noted at the end of the post, “attendance restricted to family & close friends,” meaning that those who knew DMX best are the only people allowed to visit the memorial services. COVID-19 restrictions apparently forced DMX’s family to create a smaller gathering for the services. The post continued, “New York State currently limits indoor arenas to 10% capacity. New York State COVID-19 testing guidelines and protocols will be followed.”

According to Page Six, Swizz Beatz has reached out to Kanye West and invited him to make an appearance at DMX’s memorial, likely to either perform or speak on his relationship with the “X Gon’ Give It to Ya” rapper. Though the event will be “closed to the public,” it’s fairly certain that those close to DMX will make sure his memory and legacy are honored.

Rest in peace, DMX.
