Sonovah Hillman Jr., daughter of the late rapper DMX, who died in April, will collaborate with her father for his new album scheduled to release later this month.
On Saturday, May 8, it was revealed that producers asked the 8-year-old to collaborate with them for DMX’s posthumous album after impressing fans with her raps at her father’s funeral. The project, titled Exodus, will be produced by Swizz Beatz and is set to be released on May 28. The project will be DMX’s first since 2012’s Undisputed and marks his eighth overall.
Hillman Jr. reflected on her father’s passing and admitted she is a big fan of DMX’s music. “My favorite song of his is ‘Party Up (Up in Here).’ He was happy when I told him I wanted to rap,” she told NBC Dallas Fort Worth.
Hillman Jr. is currently working on 20 songs and has released two of them. “I Hate Zoom” dropped in January, and her latest track, “TikTok Kid,” was released with a music video on Saturday (May 8).
Hillman Jr. opened up about her writing process, revealing it comes naturally. When Hillman Jr. writes her rap lyrics, she talks about “whatever is on my mind, I just write about it.”
A skill her mother says she got from DMX.
“She has a lot of his traits as far as an artist. Writing is easy for her,” Sonovah Hillman Sr. said.
She continued, “Sometimes she looks just like him depending on the angle you catch her.”
One of Hillman Jr.’s favorite moments with her Dad was a beach trip to Miami in February.
“It was fun. I just miss him and I’m kind of sad we won’t have more memories,” Hillman said.
Hillman Jr. is excited to collaborate on her dad’s album and continue her career in the music industry, saying rapping makes her feel powerful. Her father’s passion for hip-hop will continue to live on in her own musical journey.
