In the fast-paced world of hip-hop, clashes are not uncommon, but today’s Breakfast Club episode took an unexpected turn when DJ Envy took a stand and confronted Tyrese for his past disrespectful behavior leading to a larger conversation about mental health.
Tyrese, known for his roles in the Fast & Furious franchise, made a shocking appearance on The Breakfast Club on September 7. He didn’t come for a casual chat; instead, he arrived ready to address some lingering issues with DJ Envy and Charlamagne Tha God.
As the interview began, Tyrese wasted no time diving into the heart of the matter. He questioned why DJ Envy hadn’t reached out during his troubled times, considering they had shared a friendship and Tyrese had been supportive when Envy faced marital problems. It was a shot across the bow that set the stage for a fiery discussion.
Envy didn’t mince his words, sharing that he had lost respect for Tyrese due to his past behavior and comments, so much so that he had even blocked Tyrese on private chats. Envy was clear that the man he knew and respected seemed to disappear during that time.
“When we talk on these private chats that have nothing to do with the public, but who you were and how you speak and how you talk about the people next to you, I didn’t respect it,” Envy began.
“To the point where I blocked you on my chat because I didn’t want to see Tyrese as that. That wasn’t the man that was my brother.”
But Tyrese had a comeback ready, claiming that he couldn’t remember anything from that period as he was on medication for mental health issues. He posed the question, “When you get drunk, do you hold your boy to what he’s saying while he’s drunk?” It was a valid point, but Envy stood his ground, expressing his desire to remember the Tyrese he once knew.
In a candid moment, Envy revealed his perspective, stating, “The person who spoke to my wife during that time with texts, I didn’t like that. And I wanted to remember Tyrese as a brother that helped my relationship.”
“Not the Tyrese that was going through it, so I took a step back,” he continued. “I didn’t know what you were going through and I tried to talk to you and I seen who you were. When I seen how you were talking this way, I said I’m gonna take a step back.”
Tyrese then hit back, accusing DJ Envy of abandoning him when he needed support the most, emphasizing how convenient it was for Envy to “step back.”
“How convenient for you to step back. I never stepped back from you,” Tyrese said.
Envy countered by recalling how Tyrese had allegedly disrespected his wife through messages, which, in his eyes, justified his decision to distance himself.
Envy candidly admitted, “Some of the things that you said deserved me to box your mouth.” He explained that it was these actions that led to his decision to cut ties with Tyrese, as he didn’t want to remember his friend in that light.
“You’re right, but I never talked to your wife in a disrespectful manner,” the DJ said. “And you talked to mine in a disrespectful manner. And I never told nobody that… But as a man, some of the things that you said deserved me to box your mouth.
“To the point where my wife doesn’t even call you back anymore… So that was the reason I stopped talking to you and wouldn’t reach out to you anymore. I’m like, ‘I don’t want to remember my brother as that.’”

While Tyrese didn’t offer a formal apology, he did assert that his actions were “out of his control” during that time and hoped that those he hurt would extend him grace and a second chance.
“The things I said and did, the people I rubbed the wrong way and the things that I posted, my conduct overall was literally out of my control,” he said.
He attributed his erratic behavior to medication, citing examples like claiming that Will Smith had given him $5 million and announcing his ex-wife’s pregnancy when it wasn’t true.
In an interview earlier this year, Tyrese had opened up about his mental health struggles and how medication like Rexulti had impacted his actions.
“So for someone who doesn’t use drugs, you put some shit like Rexulti in my system, it’s gonna have the worst adverse effects ever,” he said on Sway in the Morning. “So I’m online talking about Will Smith giving me $5million — I never talked to Will Smith and I still haven’t recovered from the damage I did to him and his family. They didn’t deserve them phone calls.”
The Breakfast Club showdown was a compelling and raw moment, highlighting the complexities of friendship, forgiveness, and mental health in the entertainment industry. DJ Envy’s confrontation with Tyrese provided a window into the challenges that both celebrities and regular individuals face when dealing with personal demons.
As the hip-hop world continues to evolve, it’s crucial to remember that behind the glitz and glamour are real people grappling with real issues. Tyrese’s journey towards healing and reconciliation serves as a reminder that, ultimately, we are all human, capable of making mistakes, and deserving of a second chance.
