Damon Wayans defended Dave Chappelle and his controversial Netflix special during a bizarre rant about freedom.
Wayans added his two cents during an interview with TMZ on Monday. He told the outlet Chappelle “freed the slaves” when he made offensive comments about the LGBTQ community during The Closer.
“The comedians. We were slaves to PC culture,” Wayans said. “As an artist, he’s Van Gogh with his ear off. He’s trying to tell us, ‘It’s okay.’”
The Major Payne star bragged he has “always been free” and claimed Chappelle was saying “all that I have, I’m not afraid to lose it for the sake of freedom of speech.”
“You can’t edit yourself,” Wayans added. “Comedians … we’re like … Mercedes makes a great car, but they gotta crash a lot of them before they perfect it.”
Chappelle became the center of the latest debate about cancel culture after Netflix began streaming The Closer on October 5. Chappelle spent several minutes talking shit about the LGBTQ community and bitching cancel culture. He also addressed recent headlines like the homophobic comments rapper DaBaby made during his set at Rolling Loud this summer.
“You know a lot of the LGBTQ community doesn’t know DaBaby’s history, he’s a wild guy,” Chappelle said. “He once shot a n***a… and killed him — in Walmart. Oh, this is true, Google it. DaBaby shot and killed a n***a in Walmart in North Carolina. Nothing bad happened to his career. Do you see where I am going with this? In our country, you can shoot and kill a n***a but you better not hurt a gay person’s feelings.”
He also bragged about being a TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminist) and took shots at transgender people.
“I didn’t even know what the f*** [TERF] was, but I know that trans people make up words to win arguments,” Chappelle said. “I’m team TERF. I agree. I agree, man. Gender is a fact… Every human being in this room, every human being on earth had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on earth. That is a fact.”
Despite his worries about cancel culture, Netflix is standing by Chappelle and the special, as Sis2Sis previously reported.
