Funk band Morris Day & The Time have been crowned
the 2022 Soul Train Legend Award recipients. The ’80s group comprises band leader Day along with Torrell “Tori” Ruffin, Jellybean Johnson, Ricky “Freeze” Smith, Christopher Troy, Sylvester Donald and Andre “PaDre” Holmes.
Day gave a statement, according to Vibe, about the group being honored
.“They say the way you start is the way you finish, and being that I’m retiring end of next year, it’s only fitting that I return to the place that helped start it all,” the 64-year-old stated. “Our first major TV appearance was in 1981 on Soul Train with Don Cornelius. And 41 years later, to be honored with the Soul Train Awards Legend Award is what we call full circle. Truly amazing!”
Morris Day and The Time was formed in 1981, the original members being Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Jesse Johnson, Jerome Benton, and Monte Moir. Some famous songs the group is known for are “Ice Cream Castles,” “Cool,” “Jungle Love,” and “The Bird.”
In 1985, Day opted to go solo and released
his first solo album, “Color of Success,” his sophomore album being “Daydreaming” (1987). Both albums took No. 7 on the top R&B albums chart. The singer announced on Instagram that he was gearing up to launch his last solo album, “Last Call.”
In an interview with Billboard, Day was asked if the final album meant he was retiring, and he responded that he was moving on to other things.
“By no stretch am I retiring,” he told the outlet. “If the fellas — meaning the original [Time] members — want to get back together… there’s always something there. But the solo thing? I’m chillin’ with that. It’s time to do other things.”
The Soul Train Awards take place on Sunday, Nov. 27, at 8 p.m. ET.
