Rapper Common responded after his girlfriend, comedian Tiffany Haddish, said she preferred property over an engagement ring.
While appearing on the Smartless podcast with actors Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes, Haddish announced that she didn’t want an engagement ring. She wanted a duplex or apartment building.
“We don’t live in the same house. I would love for him to always be my friend,” Haddish said. “If he decides he wants to marry me, cool. I don’t want a ring, I want an apartment building. You know they present you with a ring, I want him to present me with the deed to a duplex or a 36-plex. Present me with an apartment building.”
“Come at me with a deed, baby, don’t come at me with a ring. Because if you’re trying to buy my life and change my last name to your last name, a ring ain’t gonna do it. We can get the ring after you can get the building.”
Haddish explained that property increases in value and would provide financial security for the next generation. When asked what Common thoughts were on the matter, she said he called her “crazy.”
Too Fab caught up with the rapper and asked him his thoughts about Haddish, saying she wanted a deed to property instead of a ring.
He laughed before responding that he would do what made sense for his lady and himself. Common also said that the duo has no marriage plans and is taking their relationship day by day. The rapper added that they aren’t discussing marriage at the moment.
“She always says that,” Common said. “I’m gonna do what’s good for me and the lady. Right now, all I want is happiness, good times, peace on Earth and getting great, great great work.”
“I just take it day by day, I stay in the present. It’s all love but I stay in the present….Tiffany is a wonderful, wonderful woman, a wonderful partner. But, you know, I just take it day by day … we’re not discussing marriage right now.”
While Common may not be ready for marriage just yet, he credited Haddish for helping him evolve during a People Everyday podcast. He also said he is learning to be a better listener and to love himself.
“I think one of the important things about relationships for me has been to really know myself more and love myself and be able to express the things that I want,” he said. “I’ve evolved and gotten to that place….I listen and take things in and try to do my best to understand. I listen to what Tiffany would have to say about how she feels about something and just try to understand it instead of always having an answer.”
Common added that the two make each other better. Awww. We hope you get that deed, sis!
