Graduation season is an exciting time for students as they prepare to close their academic careers and start new chapters. Rapper Common shared an emotional moment with his daughter after she graduated from law school over the weekend.
The Oscar winner was all smiles alongside his mother, Mahalia, as the two watched his daughter, Omoye Lynn, receive her degree during the hooded ceremony on May 7.
On Monday, he took to Instagram and shared the joyous event with his 3.8 million followers. The “Glory” artist and his mother applauded the graduate in the clip as she stopped and posed for pictures while holding her degree.
“There are no words to describe how proud I am! Finishing Law School at Howard University in the 3 years is pretty AMAZING! Congrats to my daughter and all the graduates of 2022. Now go out in the world and be great!” he wrote in the caption.

The 50-year-old’s daughter has played a significant role in his career. In the song “Retrospect for Life,” Common opened up about preparing for his new role as a father to the 25-year-old. He also wrote about their relationship in his memoir, One Day It’ll All Make Sense.
In 2016, the Chicago native was a guest host on Live With Kelly and Ryan, discussing his daughter’s taste in music.
“She likes some of the music but she’s really honest about my music,” he said. “She’ll say, ‘nah that’s not good. You can do better than that.’ Or, ‘You’re not as good as Chance the Rapper.’”
Aside from Lynn’s academic achievement, celebrities such as Taraji P. Henson and Anthony Anderston also received degrees at the historically Black college on Saturday.
Henson delivered the commencement speech and was honored with an honorary doctorate, and Anderson fulfilled his lifelong dream and received a bachelor of fine arts degree, Sis2Sis reported.
“To quote Biggie, ‘IT WAS ALL A DREAM!’ Words can’t begin to describe the emotional roller coaster I’m on right now,” Anderson wrote in an Instagram post. “It’s literally been 30 years in the making.”
