Dave Chappelle has been a comedy mainstay for decades, and much like his character on 1998’s “Half Baked,” he’s been known to enjoy the occasional bong or joint throughout his career. Recently brought on to Joe Rogan’s popular podcast, the actor-comedian mentioned his stoner past and also revealed that Golden Globe-winning actor Idris Elba used to sell him weed.
While on The Joe Rogan Experience, Chappelle and Rogan discussed his friendly disposition toward service workers and waitstaff.
“I’ve seen you, the way you interact with the door people at the store. That to me is everything,” the podcast host stated. “How do you treat the door staff? How do you treat the bartender? Are you friends with all those folks? And if you’re not, you’re kind of missing the whole point.”

Chappelle mentioned his friend and fellow comedian Punkie Johnson, who went from working in a bar to starring on Saturday Night Live. He then, almost reluctantly, brought up his experience with Elba during his early years as a security guard and how he used to cop weed from the famous and ruggedly handsome actor.
“Uh security, Idris Elba, the famous actor. He used to be a security guard at Caroline’s. Yeah, I used to buy weed from him,” Chappelle said, adding, “I don’t know if I should talk about it.
Elba, a London native, rose to prominence during his breakthrough role as Baltimore drug lord Stringer Bell in HBO’s The Wire. He’s been candid in the past about his drug use and his time spent as a drug dealer.

Speaking on the various gigs he held before making it big, Elba told the LA Times in 2013, “ I mean, I was DJ’ing, but I was also pushing bags of weed; I was doing my work. I had to. I know that sounds corny, but this is the truth.”
The 48-year-old actor also referenced the comedians he often saw at Caroline’s, a comedy club in Times Square.
“All those black comedians, they knew me as a doorman.”
