Rosalie Rock, Chris Rock’s mother, opened up about her reaction to seeing her son being slapped by Will Smith at the 94th Oscar Academy Awards.
In an exclusive with WIS 10 News, his mom shared how she felt about the entire ordeal, from thinking it was staged to watching in disbelief.
She expressed her disappointment in Smith, saying, “When Will slapped Chris, he slapped all of us…but he really slapped me. Because when you hurt my child, you hurt me.”
She also posed a question for Smith, “What in the world were you thinking? You didn’t think.”
Rosalie stated many things could have happened from the slap, including Chris falling or Smith being taken out of the event in handcuffs.
“You didn’t think. You reacted to your wife giving you the side-eye, and you went and made her day because she was mulled over laughing when it happened,” she continued.
Rosalie also expressed how difficult it was not to be able to speak to her son, reach out to him or console him at that moment as she did not attend the event.

After the incident, The Academy announced
that Smith would not be allowed to attend Oscars for ten years. The statement read in part, “Today, the Board of Governors convened a meeting to discuss how best to respond to Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars, in addition to accepting his resignation. The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards. We want to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances. We also want to thank our hosts, nominees, presenters, and winners for their poise and grace during our telecast.”
Rosalie is proud of her son for handling the situation the way he did. She does not believe Smith should have had his award confiscated but is sad that her son’s shining moment as host of the show was overshadowed.
“No one even heard his speech. No one was able to just be in the moment because everyone was sitting there like, ‘what just happened?’” Rosalie said.
Now that the mom has entered the chat, I wonder if Smith will respond.
