Famous Nigerian Afrofusion singer Damini Ogulu – more commonly known as Burna Boy, revealed on July 3 that Toni Braxton will receive 60% royalties on his earnings for his latest single, “Last Last.”
The Grammy Award-winning artist shared his creative process in a recent interview. Burna set the ‘Un-Break My Heart’ singer off right for sampling her music. Sample clearance can be costly, but it was a shock to many that Burna was willing to give over half the royalties for sampling Braxton’s hit R&B record, “He Wasn’t Man Enough.”
In an interview with Wallo267 and Gillie Da King on the Million Dollarz Worth of Game Podcast, he unpacked the process of coming up with the banger and securing the sample. The 31-year-old singer explained to the pair that he’s always wanted to sample a Braxton song, but this particular opportunity came to him while working with his innovative producer, Chopsticks.
Burna said, “It was my idea, to be honest. I just wanted to use that sample, and I knew Chopsticks could do something crazy with it. I just pointed that s*** out, and he took it from there. That’s one of the most creative processes ever.” he then revealed Braxton’s massive cut of the record.
“But, she is taking 60% of the shit.”
Burna wasn’t mad about the size of her cut. He only wanted to bring his creative vision to life, “But I’m not complaining, man. Hopefully, she pops out at one of the shows.”
Since its release, “Last Last” has been a success both in the states and internationally; his music is moving worldwide from selling out Madison Square Garden to being known as the “African Giant.”
“Last Last” was the first single released from Burna’s upcoming album “Love Damani.” Soon to be released, Burna has revealed that he’ll have features from big names like Kehlani, J Balvin, Khalid, and Ed Sheeran.
