‘BMF’s’ Lil Meech On Discovering The Reason Behind His Father’s Fame As A Teen

Lil Meech, the 21-year-old son of the infamous Detroit drug kingpin Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory, has taken over late-night television as the star of the hit Starz series BMF. Portraying his father and his quick rise to riches and notoriety in the 1980s, Lil Meech recently sat down with All The Smoke to offer more insight into his upbringing.

He also shared on the podcast that he didn’t understand his father’s claim to fame until he was a teen.

When asked by All The Smoke hosts Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes about when he knew his dad was Big Meech, the up-and-coming actor

noted, “I really didn’t understand until I started my teenage years. Like I started really growing up in high school, and I’m hearing the rappers say his name in songs.”

“And I’m going out, and I’m just running into all types of different people, and they telling me what my dad did for them. Because my family still wasn’t telling me as I grew up, like, ‘Yo daddy is Big Meech.’” he continued. “So I’m only finding out how big he is from people I’m around and stuff I see on the internet.”

Sharing that a classmate helped him learn more about his dad online, Lil Meech added on the show, “When I was in private school, I remember my homie showing me Wikipedia pages of my dad, like, ‘You know this your daddy?’ S**t like that, like for real. I found out he was like that from private school, from somebody else showing me. So it was different.”

In October 2021, Lil Meech, whose real name is Demetrius Flenory Jr., shared a candid message from his father via his Instagram page, with the former drug lord praising his son’s acting on BMF. In an email sent from prison, the 53-year-old wrote, “Everybody in here love the show and love your acting, saying you look like you been doing it your whole life!”

According to the Detroit News, Big Meech was sentenced to 30 years in prison for money laundering and drug trafficking crimes. This past June, a federal judge reportedly decided to reduce his sentence by three years, meaning his release could come as early as 2028.
