Blue Ivy Carter Becomes Youngest Winner In History At MTV’s VMAs

Blue Ivy Carter has made history by being the youngest winner at MTV’s Video Music Awards for her participation in the song “Brown Skin Girl.”

Blue Ivy is the daughter of pop star Beyonce and rap mogul Jay-Z.

On Sunday night at the VMAs, she took home the trophy for Best Cinematography for the “Brown Skin Girl”   video.

The nine-year-old star beat out Billie Eilish, Foo Fighters, Justin Bieber and Chance the Rapper and Lorde for the prize. She also shared the honor with other cinematographers for the video Benoit Soler, Malik H. Sayeed, Muhammad Atta Amed, Santiago Gonzalez, and Ryan Helfant, reported

People.

Blue Ivy and Beyonce’s song was also nominated for Best R&B Video, but Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak won the VMA for “Leave The Door Open.”

“Brown Skin Girl” was originally a song on the Lion King companion album that Blue Ivy’s mother released.

The video for the track was released on YouTube in August 2020 after initially only being available to Disney+ subscribers.

The song debuted to some controversy because celebrating Black beauty is frowned upon in a society that holds on to a white beauty standard. Soon after the song was released, white Twitter even had a #whiteskingirlchallenge as a shoddy imitation of the #brownskingirlchallenge.

However, the beauty of Black women is undeniable and deserves to be celebrated. The fact that Blue Ivy and other young Black girls can be affirmed through the arts on a level previous generations were not– is impressive regardless of any acclamation.

It is almost certain that Blue Ivy, who is already ahead of the game in many regards, will be one of the many Black women who will inspire the young girls who are coming up behind her.

Well done, Blue Ivy!
