On a recent episode of The Wendy Williams Show, the no-holds-barred talk show host discussed Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Porsha Williams and Simon Guobadia, who recently revealed that they plan to have three separate weddings. Sister 2 Sister reported last week that the newly engaged couple is currently planning to wed in Guobadia’s home country, Nigeria, and the U.S. and at one of his homes abroad.
While on the topic of their extravagant nuptial plans, Williams controversially implied that Guobadia’s wealth might not be as long as everyone thinks and that his vacation homes could be no more than a “straw hut.”
“No, don’t be impressed,” the veteran talk show host told her audience last Friday. “Let me tell you something right now, and I haven’t traveled a lot. But you know how land is cheap, and houses are cheap, and you can say you have a house, but really it’s a trailer on one property in one state, a straw hut in another, and a little something with a shared pool by the community in another.”
Yikes.
Guobadia, taking Williams’ comments in stride, posted a clip of himself sitting outside an extravagant patio with the caption, “‘Hut living.’ How you doin’ Porsha?”

But Black Twitter wasn’t so forgiving.
Many claimed that the host was using xenophobic language and enforcing negative stereotypes with her “straw hut” comment.
“Wendy Williams said that Porsha and Simon’s weddings going to be in a hut. I give up on the Black Americans that speak like that. If you aren’t committed to bringing together BA’s and Africans, I’m throwing you out,” one Twitter user posted about Williams’ commentary.

Porsha said she wanted 3 weddings, w/ one being an African customs wedding honoring his culture and another being a ceremony at one of his homes abroad, and Wendy Williams sat before her MOSTLY WHITE audience and told them not to be impressed, b/c it’s prob a hut?

What’s wrong with living in a hut anyways? It’s not an insult to those who live in one. It’s their home. Stop using other people’s way of live to create dumb insults..

“To say a person from Nigeria lives in a “straw hut” is very derogatory and plain ignorant,” added another Twitter user. “This is not @WendyWilliams first time making disparaging comments about the Black community.”
