Black Twitter had some choice words for Will Smith after saying he didn’t want to do slave movies that featured revenge.
Smith’s statements were taken from his recent GQ interview where he spoke about various aspects of his life and career. One of the topics that came up was how he turned down the lead role in the movie Django Unchained.
Apparently, the theme of the character Django going on a journey to rescue Broomhilda was too close to revenge for him.
“I’ve always avoided making films about slavery,” he said. “And the first time I considered it was Django. But I didn’t want to make a slavery film about vengeance.”
Smith is working on a new Apple TV project; a new slave project, at that. However, he maintains that there is a difference between the other movies and his entitled Emancipation.
“Emancipation is different. It would be a disservice to think of it as a “slavery movie,” he said. “The story itself is not (just) about the dehumanizing violence of slavery. It’s also about perseverance.”
The main character in the project is named “Whipped Peter” and the gist is about Black love. So, it’s a Black love slave movie; similar to…Django Unchained.
Okay.
Black Twitter got wind of it and felt the need to give their expert opinions on the situation.
Will Smith sees Django as just a slave movie and not a revenge flick? Jabria, are you smart??

Will smith said he didn’t want to play Django role he was offered cuz he didn’t want to make a slave movie about vengeance. He wanted to be a super hero.

So he can’t show black HEROES such as Django, who was a slave for 10 WHOLE MINUTES OF THE MOVIE getting RIGHTEOUS BOUNTY HUNTER REVENGE: but he can play a dude called KillShot???
You know #WillSmith really thinks he’s the deep dude standing for our community: he’s not. At all.
