Actress Sandra Bullock Talks About Life After Adopting Two Black Children

On a new episode of Red Table Talk, aired on Wednesday, December 1, actress Sandra Bullock opens up. She talks about life after adopting two Black children, her son Louis and daughter Laila.

Bullock was asked what her response is to people who question her decision to adopt Black kids as a white woman, to which she said she doesn’t really feel the need to explain it.

“No one would say that to my face,” she said in the episode. “But guess what? You get the racism. There’s been…sure, a lot of it. Guess what? Not my problem. Your sickness is not my problem.”

Despite Bullock saying she’s primarily unfazed by the commentary she’s gotten, the actress did say there have been times she wished that they shared the same skin color.

“To say that I wish our skins matched, sometimes I do. Because then it would be easier on how people approach us,” she said. “But I have the same feelings as a woman with brown skin being her babies or a white woman with white babies.”

Bullock, however, is resilient and keeps her head high in the face of adversity.

“I love who they are,” she said. “Every day, I get to see who they are. I am one of the lucky individuals that get to be around my children all the time and see who they get to grow up and be. And who they’re growing up to be, I couldn’t be more proud of.”

According to Essence, In 2010, Bullock first announced that she had adopted her baby boy, Louis, at the time she was still married to her ex, Jesse James. Five years later, she adopted three-year-old Laila and was featured on the cover of People magazine with both of her babies.

“My family is blended and diverse, nutty, and loving and understanding,” she said at the time. “That’s a family.”
