Black Twitter is justly appalled and peeved at the Academy Award’s disrespect for awarding the legendary and astounding actress Angela Bassett an Honorary Oscar award.
The Academy’s Board of Governors dared to announce on Monday that the What’s Love Got To Do With It actress will be presented with an Honorary Oscar award at the Academy’s 14th Governors Awards on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023, taking place at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
Her breakthrough role as Tina Turner landed her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress, and she received her second nomination for portraying Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which she wasn’t happy to lose, as seen in the viral video displaying her subtle disappointed look when Jamie Lee Curtis’ name was called instead of hers.
Angela Bassettâs reaction to Jamie Lee Curtisâ name being calledâŠyou can tell how much that Oscar would have meant to her. she is, was, and always will be incredible. I better see her on that stage SOON pic.twitter.com/oHDfuDUksG

Bassett became an esteemed actress due to her superior work in movies like The Jacksons: An American Dream, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Black Panther, Avengers: Endgame, Akeelah and the Bee and more. Yet, the Academy’s Board thought the world’s most prominent actress deserved an Honorary Oscar award, not the real thing.
Black Twitter quickly slammed the Board for its disrespect.
Angela Bassett not getting an Oscar for this scene is the biggest blunder in Oscar history pic.twitter.com/Z9LBpmtXnz

Angela Bassett award an Honorary Oscar award. For someone who played Katherine Jackson,Tina Turner, Rosa Parks, Akeelah Momma, Wakanda, etc. To receive an Honorary Oscar award that is so disrespectful that is like a particapte trophy. pic.twitter.com/QI0T04f3Mo

Or they couldâve just gave her her well deserved oscar back in march and give the honorary one to Jamie lee curtis..

This is kinda a slap in the face, cause they had the opportunity to award her for her decades of amazing work last March. But weâll take what we can get I guess.
