A Love & Hip Hop movie based on the hit VH1 reality show is allegedly in the works.
According to reports, sources said the film has already been underway, as its script was being written. They also noted that some of the reality franchise’s creators were involved with the production of the upcoming movie.
The first episode of Love & Hip Hop kicked off with Love & Hip Hop: New York on Mar. 6, 2011, starring Jim Jones, Chrissy Lampkin, Emily Bustamante, Mashonda, and others. Created by media mogul Mona Scott-Young, the series focused on individuals’ professional and personal lives in the hip-hop and R&B industry.
Since its inception, the show moved on to various spin-offs, including Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta, Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood, and Love & Hip Hop: Miami. Its Atlanta franchise catapulted the show to great heights, as the cast, including Stevie J, Rasheeda Ali, Joseline Hernandez, and Mimi Faust, and memorable storylines drew in a loyal audience. A recap video of LHH ATL‘s first episode, which aired on Jun. 12, 2012, has garnered over two million views on VH1’s YouTube channel.
Seasons six and seven debuted
rapper Cardi B, who was initially a social media sensation before becoming a reality star and Grammy Award-winning musician. The show was reportedly inspired by Young’s own experience moving through the rap industry as she co-founded the music management company, Violator with late music executive Chris Lighty in 1989. Through the company, she contributed to the careers of iconic musicians such as LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, and 50 Cent. In 2005, she founded Monami entertainment company, which has been the force behind her Love & Hip Hop franchise.
Nearly a decade after its first episode aired, the 55-year-old Haitian-American executive expressed her thoughts on the show’s longevity.
“That’s a testament to the staying power of the show: the concept, the cast members, the way they put their lives out there,” she said.
In 2019, Love & Hip Hop‘s cast won the Best Reality Royalty Award at the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards. In 2021, they also received MTV’s Best Reality Cast Award, and the show itself won the Best Documentary-Reality Show.
