A Broward Woman Died After Undergoing A Cosmetic Procedure, Family Seeks Justice

A 26-year-old Broward woman died in October 2021 after going under anesthesia for a cosmetic procedure but not waking up. The victim’s family is seeking justice after details emerged revealing the doctor who administered the anesthesia was medically restricted.

The procedure occurred at Best U Now, located in Plantation, FL, on Oct. 20, 2021. Jaynisha “Jayla” Williams traveled with her mother, Latoshia Leggett, from Hillsborough County, FL, for the procedure, which was a breast enlargement and Brazilian butt lift (BBL). While waiting

in the lobby for her daughter’s procedure to finish, Leggett would request updates on her daughter, which she would be told her daughter was good.

The mother started to get worried after other patients would get discharged but not her daughter. That’s when Leggett heard sirens and saw an ambulance pull up.

According to NBC Miami, reports from the Broward Medical Examiner’s Office showed that the procedure was completed, but Williams didn’t wake up from the anesthesia. Leggett was approached by medical staff while her daughter was being transported to Plantation general hospital and informed that her daughter had died.

Although the cause of death is undetermined, it has been revealed that the Best U Now physician, Dr. Millicent Muir, who administered the anesthesia, wasn’t a qualified professional to sedate Williams.

The cosmetic center has had numerous complaints filed against them, including by the Florida Health Department, requesting Best U Now’s registration be revoked and that Dr. John Edward Nees face the consequences.

So far, no arrests have been made, but the family is still hoping for justice.

In an interview with NBC, Williams’ sister, Kimia Spikes, said that her sister “was very caring and always knew what to say.” She described her sister’s personality as “cheerful,” stating she had a “beautiful soul.”

Williams leaves behind her 5-year-old and 2-year-old, who, according to Leggett, ask to “go to heaven to see their mom. They don’t understand.”
