Taraji P. Henson is just like the rest of us. She had an awful year last year. Not only was she wading her way through this new pandemic life, but she also found herself coping with a failed engagement and mental health issues. She sought therapy to help her through and came to a revelation. Telling Coveteur magazine, she learned, “Perfection is the perfect lie.”
“My therapist set me free when she said that. Who’s the judge? Who do we go to and say, ‘Is this perfect?’ It’s so objective.”
Today, Henson doesn’t believe in perfection. She believes in self-care and writing one’s own story. For Henson, this began with her hair, the most political and often painful aspect of Black womanhood.
Using her hair to express herself (these days it is in a color she calls violet-magenta), Henson took this quarantine time to create a line of hair care/self-care products of her own – a line she calls TPH by Taraji.
“My haircare line is all about self-care. I don’t want people to treat wash day as a chore, but as a self-care day. That’s why I have the exfoliant scrub for your scalp. There’s steps to it, and you can take your time. I created a spa day for your scalp.”
Henson wants you to write your own story and she wants to hear it so she can feature you and your story on her product website. Visit her Instagram @tarajiphenson for more details.
