The award recognizes the hip-hop and rap mogulâs decades of influence on the music industry and his incomparable success: he had two chart-topping albums on the Billboard 200 and five #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
The news of his Global Icon Award came amid the legend gearing up to release the long-awaited âLove Album: Off The Grid,â which releases on Sept. 15, 2023.
Diddy (real name Sean Combs) is one of the biggest names in the music industry, known for creating the music production company Bad Boy Entertainment in 1993.Â
His name is tied to some of the greatest works he produced with stars like Mary J. Blige, Biggie Smalls, Mariah Carey, Boys II Men, SWV, Babyface, Method Man, New Edition, Faith Evans, Lilâ Kim, TLC, Aretha Franklin and more.Â
Diddy was also known for his own hot tracks, âBad Boy for Live,â âSatisfy You,â âItâs All About the Benjamins,â âVictory,â âBeen Around the Worldâ and âIâll Be Missing You.â
Along with releasing âThe Love Album: Off the Grid,â Diddy is also supporting his son, King Combs, as he pursues his music career, which he saw success with his hit âCanât Stop Wonât Stop,â featuring Kodak Black.
In an interview with Billboard News, Diddy explained that he takes a hands-off approach to his sonâs career.
âIâve been extra hard on him and really just telling him the truth that, âYo, youâre my son, and you have to deal with these things,ââ Diddy said. âI never picked a beat for him. I never set up a meeting for him. Then now to see him do it himself, and weâre out here doing it together, I didnât imagine that.â
The VMAs air on MTV and occur at New Jersey’s Prudential Center on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m. EST.
